Artist Statement: The ancient art of mosaic is based on an interpretation of the fragmented images of an experience, and then translating those images into a tactile form. As a painter creates an image with one brushstroke at a time, I paint in glass, stone, metal, china, shells, and a variety of materials that add dimension, interest and excitement to the work. Each piece is precisely nipped and cut to fit the mosaic and what I'm trying to express in the mosaic. I often utilize elements consisting of my handcrafted fine silver (.99 silver), fused glass pieces, embossed metals and found objects. I am inspired by consciousness and human potential and transformation. Many of my mosaics focus on transformation and I enjoy transforming ordinary or old and discarded objects into works of meaning and beauty. I create mosaic mirrors as a simple metaphor for self reflection, and beauty within. Much of my mosaic art reflects my love of gardening as well. I enjoy incorporating movement, color, texture, and reflection in my work. |
